On 22-25 July 2009, the National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS) in Kolkata, India will hold the annual ILSA International Law Conference, bringing together hundreds of law students from around the world to learn and network with esteemed members of the international legal community. The conference is being organized by the NUJS International Law Society (NUJS-ILS).

The Conference will feature panel discussions, student presentations, and social events. The Conference's overall theme is "Trade and the Environment: Does International Law Have the Answers?".

International trade both drives global economic growth and depletes the world’s natural resources. Lawyers are often tasked with determining how to reconcile the competing interests of businesses and environmentalists. Among other issues, international lawyers must determine how to best incorporate environmental protections into bilateral and regional trade agreements and how to harmonize the environmental policies of trading partners such that efforts to protect the environment are equitably shared. The 2009 ILSA International Conference will address the challenges posed by this interplay between trade and the environment, including the role of trade regulations in the sustainable management of natural resources; intellectual property protection of plant varieties in the multilateral trading system; the use of Process Production Methods (PPM’s) to regulate trade in goods; multilateral environmental agreements (MEA’s) versus the World Trade Organization system; climate change policy.
